Candy Quackenbush, a restless teenager trapped in the dull monotony of Chickentown, Minnesota, stumbles upon a mysterious lighthouse at the edge of town and is swept away to the Abarat - a fantastical archipelago where each island represents a different hour of the day. There she discovers a world under threat from dark forces, including the sorcerer Christopher Carrion and the industrialist Rojo Pixler, who seek to dominate the islands.
